Can I Drain My Hot Tub for the Summer?
This time of year we have a number of people coming in and asking about draining their hot tubs for the summer. Personally, I like to just drop the temperature a bit and use it for the kids and I to cool off in on hot days :) When there are days of over 30 C outside quite consistently, we've actually turned ours down to 92 F and it's perfect! It's safe to drain your hot tub for the summer. If you do choose to drain your hot tub, make sure to blow the water out of all the plumbing and equipment. This is critical because stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for undesirable algae and bio-films and come time to start it up again you're going to get a nasty surprise! No one wants that! If you would like our experienced Service Techs take care of that for you, give Richard, our Service Manager, a call or text at 403-327-7665 to arrange a service call or fill out the Service Request Form.
Spa QuickDrain
When draining your tub, there are a number of ways to proceed. You can open the drain/fill valve that's located at the bottom of most tubs in the equipment area. If you would like to reduce the process to about 25 minutes, there is a great tool we have available for purchase in the store called a QuickDrain. Or, for even quicker draining, you can purchase a small sump pump available at most home building stores. If it's been a while since you cleaned your hot tub plumbing lines, this would be a great time to do that as well. There are a couple of products available in the store that will do an excellent job of stripping all the plumbing lines of any buildup and ensure a clean tub when you start it up again. Mineraluxe Cleanse & Drain works over a 24 hour period. If you would like to get it done quicker, a product called Ahh-Some will take care of things in about 30 minutes. So, whether you choose to turn the temperature down for the summer or shut down the tub until the fall, keep enjoying your hot tub experience!
